Thanks to the generosity of the Great Salt Bay School’s PTO, the Resource Room teachers were able to take a group of 8th graders and 1st graders to the FARMS Community Kitchen. This was a great mentoring experience for our Resource Room 8th graders. They were able to put into practice the skills and knowledge they have gained this year while visiting FARMS monthly. Our older students were able to read the recipes to the younger students and guide them as they cut and peeled vegetables, made dough for pierogies and and stuffed the pierogies. It is so important to have kids develop these relational skills and take on a leadership role. FARMS has done that for this group of students and it was amazing to have them pass this on to the younger Resource Room kids. We are hopeful this type of mentorship will continue next year.
Our cooking class was sponsored by Damariscotta Bank and Trust. We thank them for underwriting our visit. FARMS (Focus on Agriculture in Rural Maine Schools) is a 501 c (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to provide education about good nutrition and the role of local farms in promoting healthy, sustainable communities.
